Our Charity’s Mission

To provide grants and awards to Liverpool secondary schools and students for educational initiatives that lie outside standard school funding.

In addition to this core mission, LEGCT also offers:

Modest individual bursaries for students in their final year of secondary school

Seed funding for projects that support the wider development of young people in the Liverpool area

What we fund

LEGCT supports education in Liverpool through school grants, student support, bursaries, and wider community projects. Our funding helps young people access opportunities that extend beyond standard school provision.

Grants for Schools

  • Funding for calm spaces supporting pupil wellbeing
  • Partial funding for school trips and cultural visits
  • Support for school-led research and history projects
  • Contributions towards sports facilities and equipment

Support for Students

  • Grants of up to £500 for individual students
  • Support for participation in national and international projects
  • Help with specialist courses not offered locally
  • Assistance with extracurricular opportunities

Student Bursaries

  • Up to 8 prize bursaries each year, worth £250 each
  • Open to students studying history, music or modern languages
  • Recognition for community service and public engagement
  • Nominations invited directly from headteachers

Other Projects

  • NEBULA software system to improve attendance
  • Liverpool Literacy Cycle, inspiring creativity in writing
  • Youth Works, training young people as qualified Youth Workers

Our History

LEGCT traces its roots to 1874, when it was established to award scholarships to Liverpool pupils for secondary education. It also set examination papers to determine eligibility.

The charity’s focus has evolved with changing educational needs. For the past 50 years, it has concentrated on providing grants for extracurricular or non-core educational activities in Liverpool’s secondary schools.

Governance

LEGCT (under its legal name, Liverpool Council of Education) has operated as a charity since its foundation and has been registered with the Charity Commission since the 1960s.

Charity Commission for England and Wales

The Board of Trustees governs the charity in accordance with its constitution. The Board is composed entirely of volunteers who bring expertise from education, business, and the voluntary sector. Several Liverpool City Councillors also sit on the Board, ensuring alignment with city education and employability priorities.

The Trustees regularly review the charity’s activities and explore new opportunities to support education in Liverpool.
